Edith A. Tonelli (Tang DiAn) has been working in the visual arts for over 30 years. She was trained originally for her Master's degree at Hunter College in New York, in European painting techniques, ink brush drawing, and the Japanese woodblock printmaking process. She finished her Ph.D. at Boston University, focusing on American Culture and the Arts.

After many years of working at large educational institutions, such as The National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, The DeCordova Museum, and The UCLA Museum, she has settled on Cape Cod and opened a private studio for painting, photography, and graphic arts, as well as TonelliArts Gallery.

In 2006, she spent several months in China, studying and painting traditional masterworks of Chinese Brush Painting, also known as "Sumi-e," in Japan. She was given the name Tang DiAn by her Chinese friends, and commisioned Beijing craftsmen to carve her square signature stamp, shown at the top left.
